Youth Basketball Rules

Unless otherwise specified rules will be in accordance with the National Federation of State High School Association Basketball Rules.

 

TIME:

a. The designated visitor team will provide an official timekeeper.

b. Game will be four (4) - eight (8) minute quarters.

c. Running Clock. Exception: Time stopped in the last 2 minutes of the 2nd and 4th quarters for any dead ball.

d. One minute between quarters. Three (3) minutes between halves.

e. Tie game - overtime(s) of three (3) minutes duration.

f. Forfeit Time: Ten (10) minutes after scheduled starting time. Four (4) players constitute a team.

 

POSSESSION:

First possession determined by coin toss, subsequent possessions alternate. (No jump balls).

 

SCOREKEEPING:

The designated home team will provide an official scorekeeper. Be sure to record first and last names and player number.

 

TIME-OUTS:

Each team has two (2) - thirty (30) second time-outs per half.

Overtime: One (1) time-out per three minute period.

 

VIOLATIONS:

Under the offensive basket four (4) seconds will constitute a lane violation (5-6 grades); three (3) seconds for 7-8 grades. No lane violation rule for grades 3 & 4, no time limit.

 

FREE THROWS:

3rd through 5th grade only will shoot from the bottom of the circle.
Ball has to hit the rim on free throws before anybody in the lane can move including the shooter.

 

DEFENSIVE PLAY:

a. No press defense in the 3rd & 4th grade. In the 5th & 6th grade press is allowed the last minute of the game only. 7th & 8th grade can press the entire game. Defense may guard offense only in the offensive forecourt.

b. If a defensive player rebounds the ball, opposing players must retreat to the backcourt
(possession determined in the offensive forecourt). Backcourt press rule. (does not apply or 7 & 8 grades)

c. As soon as, and as long as, a team holds a fifteen (15) point or more advantage, no
pressure/press defense will be allowed by that team.

 

FOULS:

a. Player committing a foul must raise a hand to identify to the scorekeeper.

b. Penalty for a technical foul called for unsportsmanlike conduct by a coach, player or spectator will be two free throws and possession of the ball.

 

SUBSTITUTIONS:

a. Substitutes must check in with the official scorekeeper.

b. Each player must play at least one entire quarter (8 minutes) per game.
